Kim, Jung Soo

Kim, Jung Soo is an interdisciplinary artist and re-illuminator based in Chicago. She transforms 'space' into 'place' by tracing the emotional, spatial, and narrative patterns embedded in environments. Drawing from her background in both Korea and the United States, her work bridges site-specific installations, participatory projects, and digital-interactive media.

Kim uses surrounding elements to express the fluid selves revealed through space—capturing traces of people in bustling cities, the environmental histories of places, and the digitally extended dimensions of space. Her research explores how we develop spatial ability and spatial knowledge to locate ourselves and form relationships with our surroundings. This approach goes beyond simply narrating a space; it builds environments where viewers can sensorially acquire a psychogeographical sense of “where I am,” creating a framework to understand fluid identities.

Her projects, such as The Pole, Yellow, Wind Chime Series, and 회자정리 거자필반, respond to specific environments and invite public engagement, blending sensory experience with narratives of memory, identity, and belonging.

Kim holds an MFA in Art and Technology Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA in New Forms from Seoul Women’s University. She is the founder and director of Dynamic Nature & Art (DNA), a Chicago-based community platform fostering collaborations between artists, scientists, and technologists. Her work has been presented in exhibitions, residencies, and community projects internationally, including Iceland, Korea, and the United States.
